Recorded distribution in Britain and Ireland
Most records are from the Shetland Isles and western Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Limited records on the east and south coast of England.Global distribution
-Habitat
Venus verrucosa is found partly buried in sand and gravel substrata. It is most commonly found from the low intertidal down to about 100 m.Depth range
-Identifying features
- A bivalve mollusc with equally sized valves that grows to a maximum of 7 cm.
- Off-white to brown in colour, darkest at the outer edges.
- 20 or more prominent radiating ridges intersected by grooves creating erect spines.
- The escutcheon, covering the ligament, is much wider in the left valve and is marked with brown stripes.
- The internal surface is white in colour.
- Each valve has three cardinal teeth positioned below the umbo.
